The exact cause of death is unknown, according to a team from the University of California, Davis, but fossils reveal the predator died shortly after its enormous meal. When he returned after spending three years in England, he walked into an deserted camp, finding a wooden post with the word ‘Croatoan’ carved in it. This clue, along with the writings has led Scott Dawson, a hobby archaeologists, to say the mystery is finally over. He has long theorized that the settlers moved to Hatteras Island where they lived happily with the Croatoan tribe. A slate tablet inset and lead pencil was also discovered at the dig that may have belonged to White, which shows a drawing of an Englishman shooting a Native American in the back. The sketch lines up with historical records that describe a similar event.

We focused on a forested catchment because previous paleolimnological studies conducted in Fennoscandia focused mainly on subarctic lakes within a range of shifting treeline s. Changes in the Cladocera and diatom communities appear to have been linked to aquatic macrophyte development, which in turn, was probably regulated by catchment development and hydrology, and a consequent decrease in nutrient input from the catchment. Possible reasons for low nutrient concentration in the late Holocene include: 1 slower biogeochemical cycling due to cooler climate, 2 a new hydrologic outlet and associated shorter water-retention times, and 3 accelerated peatland development in the catchment that affected water flow patterns and nutrient cycling.

X- and g -irradiation of the Ge-containing glasses induces simultaneously electron and hole paramagnetic defects, stable at room temperature, whereas the same irradiation of glasses with Ca3Ga2O6 composition yields only in stable hole paramagnetic defects. The hole defects belong to ensembles of O- centres, localised at different non-bridging oxygens of the glass network. The TSL glow curves with the maximum near C in the g – and X-irradiated Ge-containing glasses and the glass and ceramics with Ca3Ga2O6 composition are related to recombination of the O- centres.
The TSL glow curve peaked in the vicinity of C observed in the g – and X-irradiated glasses with Ca3Ga2O6 composition could be assigned to recombin-ation of non-paramagnetic defects. No TSL glow curves are observed in the b -irradiated Ge-containing glasses, whereas the TSL glow curves with the maxima at about , and C are peculiar for the glass and ceramics with Ca3Ga2O6 composition. Biological proxy evidence, namely coming from aquatic plant species, indicates July temperatures as high as Macrofossil evidence demonstrates for the first time the presence of pines accompanied by tree birch during the MIS 3 interstadial in northern Fennoscandia. These results concur with contemporary insolation model outcomes but contradict with the previous proxy-based view of open tundra conditions during the MIS 3.
The data suggest that there are highly dynamic interstadial continental ice-sheet dynamics following changes in orbital forcing. Warm climate enabled the establishment of forests on exposed landscape.

Our goal is to better understand the mechanisms that maintain adult tissues and how cancer cells hijack these mechanisms to enable the formation of tumors.

We measured ring widths and isotopic abundances of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen delta 13 C, delta 18 O and delta 2 H from the latewood of tree rings of pedunculate oak Quercus robur L. Ring width was observed to be related to precipitation and relative humidity but not significantly to temperature. Variations in delta 2 H were discovered to be complex combinations of signals from biochemical and physical processes.
The results suggest that oaks in Finland can be used as a source of climate information. The relationship between climate and ring width indicates that water availability is the main control of ring radial growth. This is supported by the isotope data. High correlation between delta 13 C and delta 18 O time series indicates that photosynthetic carbon assimilation is limited by stomatal control. Therefore, in contrast to the expected temperature limitation, our data indicate that drought limits oak growth more than cold temperatures on the border of its northernmost distribution range.

Interstadial and non-glacial stadial sediments collected in boreholes from Sokli in northeastern Finland have been dated by optically stimulated luminescence on quartz and feldspar grains. The quartz OSL ages follow stratigraphic order, with one exception, and support the litho- and biostratigraphical correlation with the NW European mainland climate-stratigraphy and the marine oxygen-isotope stages.
Feldspar IRSL dates generally overestimate the age, probably due to incomplete bleaching.
